Since its cancellation three years ago, rumours have been rife of a suggested revival for Scalebound, the Platinum-developed action game headed up by Devil May Cry and Bayonetta maestro Hideki Kamiya. One rumour even reckoned that Nintendo could be swooping in to bring the game to Switch.
Platinum even remarked that it would love to return to development on Scalebound, but noted that such a decision would be in Microsoft's hands. Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has stated that Microsoft has no such plans to revive Scalebound. Apparently, the project is "something we've all moved past", he told IGN in an interview (via Eurogamer).
"It's a tough one. I have a ton of respect for Platinum, Kamiya-san and the team and I feel no ill-will," Spencer said. "And we talk to those guys -- there's no animosity between the teams. We tried to go do something and it didn't work."
Spencer went on to say that he has regrets regarding the decision to be so transparent around what it was doing with Scalebound and Fable Legends, which was also canned in March 2016, in turn leading to the closure of Lionhead Studios.
"I regret we were as public about what we tried to go do," he said. "I did some learning around Fable Legends and Scalebound about being public about things before I know we have a real, believable plan that I can hold in my hands and know was going to be there. And we just didn't get there with Scalebound and the team. And I say that about both teams.
"Of course we're going to be a little upset we weren't able to deliver on our goals for that title. We're not working on it. I'm not at Platinum today but I'm almost positive they're not working on it. It's something we've all moved past. It's not something I see as a high point in my role -- having to cancel a game we'd talked about for years. But for the people out there thinking there's something still in the works -- there's not."
While Microsoft still owns the IP for Scalebound, PlatinumGames currently has a lot of irons in the fire, regardless. The likes of Bayonetta 3, The Wonderful 101 Remastered (neither of which are coming to Xbox One) are in the works, alongside a collaborative effort on a new version of NieR Replicant alongside Toylogic. Don't hold your breath for Scalebound making a comeback, then. Clearly, it's not going to happen.
That's a damn shame. I wish they'd just sell the IP rights then. Let someone else make it. The idea of the game and what it could be are great.
Even if Platinum don't make it, I'd like to see some developer try. And Microsoft clearly have no interest in it, so sell it to Sony, Nintendo or preferably a third party studio like THQ Nordic. You know they'd buy it in a heartbeat. lol
