Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will be available for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch, as an optimised version that will "take advantage of the new hardware and features on next-gen consoles." In mid-2021, Epic then plans to migrate Fortnite to its cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5.

Cross-play will continue to be supported across console generations, as will cross-progression across platforms. That means your Fortnite account, progression, and items will carry across to the next-gen version of the game. Epic also says that it will continue to support the current-gen versions of Fortnite, as well as the next-gen ones.

Fortnite will be available for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch in 'holiday 2020', so you'll have something familar and cosy to dive into on day one. And if you're wondering what Unreal Engine 5 will mean for the game, you can ogle a PS5 tech demo on our sister site, here.
