Ubisoft announced Gods and Monsters at E3 2019 last year, but we've yet to see any gameplay from the upcoming open world game - until now, that is.

In a strange turn of events, Google Stadia accidentally listed an old build of the game on its store, which was originally shown to press behind closed doors at E3 2019. You can check it out on Reddit here. It's obviously not fully representative of what the finished game will be like - there are unfinished sections and placeholder assets - but it clearly takes heavy inspiration from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with the climbing and stamina wheel looking nearly identical.

Marc-Alexis Cote, an executive at Ubisoft Quebec, gave a statement to Eurogamer on the leak, even confirming that the game won't even be called Gods and Monsters when it releases.

"Our vision for the game formerly known as Gods and Monsters has evolved in surprising ways, which is common when developing exciting new worlds," Ubisoft Quebec exec Marc-Alexis Cote said in a statement issued to Eurogamer.

"This footage is from our E3 2019 demo, which was shown to select press last June and is now over one year old. Much has changed since then in terms of features, tone, art and character design, and even the name of the game. We are hard at work and very excited to finally show players what we have created at the end of summer."

It sounds like we'll get a much more up-to-date look at the game at the Ubisoft Forward conference next month then, and it will be interesting to see how much it has changed. As for the bizarre leak, Google Stadia put out a statement to Kotaku apologising for the mistake.

"Regretfully, on Thursday morning, we mistakenly made an E3 2019 demo version of Gods & Monsters from Ubisoft available on the Stadia store that was not intended for the public to play. A few hundred gamers were able to play it for less than 30 minutes. We sincerely apologise to our partners at Ubisoft for this mistake."

The game formerly known as Gods and Monsters is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC at an unspecified date.
