Ubisoft has released a development update on its long-awaited pirate-em-up Skull & Bones.

According to the update, production on Skull & Bones has been "in full swing with a new vision" for the game, with the team at Ubisoft Singapore committed to releasing the game and supporting it post-launch. The update also confirmed that Skull & Bones won't be featured during tonight's Ubisoft Forward event.

"Many of you have been wondering why we’ve had to postpone our launch. The answer is that we simply needed more time. We dreamt something bigger for Skull & Bones, and these ambitions naturally came with bigger challenges," explained new Creative Director Elisabeth Pellen.

"These difficulties resulted in necessary delays for our game. Critical questions needed to be addressed over the past several months such as: how do we modernize the classic pirate fantasy? How do we ensure a more immersive and visceral experience? How do we create cool and memorable moments in-game? For most of these questions to be answered, it was clear that we needed more development time."

This update confirms earlier reports from VGC, which stated that Skull & Bones had been rebooted and correctly reported that Ubisoft's Elisabeth Pellen had taken over the helm as creative director.

"As Skull & Bones evolved from its original idea to what it is now, it was also necessary to have some fresh eyes join the team," Pellen continues. "I was one of those people when I joined as Skull & Bones’ creative director a little over two years ago. I have been part of the game’s core team that leads many of the talented developers at Ubisoft Singapore. Since then, many new talents have joined our global crew."

Development is also being supported by Ubisoft teams in Berlin, Chengdu, Kiev, Paris and the Philippines, and we've been promised further updates on the game in 2021. It's good to hear that Skull & Bones is still in development, although it will likely be a much different game from the one we saw announced over three years ago.

  • Dang was looking forward, no bs if they added a system for boarding ships and added combat system similar to For Honor for ground battle that would be cool
  • Just give me Black flag 2, with more naval combat and more underwater caverns/wrecks and hideouts to explore, and I will be happy. Just keep the live service model and grotesque monetisation out of it and keep the PvP optional, please.
