Game of the Year Awards 2020 - The Nominees

Oh, 2020… What a shitty year you’ve been. And because time is a linear thing and the idea of a year being inherently bad is kinda stupid, there’s no guarantee that 2021 will be any better. Which is why it’s important to celebrate the good things in life, including all of the wonderful games we had the good fortune to enjoy this year.

More than ever, video games have been vital, if only to help preserve our sanity while we’re stuck indoors self-isolating. We’re (mostly) all in the same boat, and games have been a lifeline as the world burns around us. In a way, it seems reductive to stick them in a list, seeing how they’ve all been made under difficult circumstances, providing hours of distraction from the dumpster fire that has been 2020. The real winners are us.

As is always the case, arguments have ensued when compiling 2020’s Game of the Year nominees, with games being swapped in and out, some choices being vetoed, and others squeezing in by the skin of their teeth. If your favourite didn’t make it in, don’t take it personally. This is our own collective opinion, after all, and doesn’t impact what might have been your personal fave. We’ll have the winners for you next week!

From all of us here, have a very Merry Christmas!

  • Any category in which Yakuza 7 is nominated, it wins in my book. Their first attempt at a rpg after 7 beat-em-ups, and they fucking nailed it.
  • Yakuza should win every category it is nominated in
  • Best Fresh Gameplay Feature

"Lair of the Clockwork God’s Hybrid Gameplay" appears twice in the same category
  • Just going to completely look over Ghostrunner, huh?
  • When you start with best story & best performance it shows your awards are worth nothing.

Its video games not movies, geez gaming going down the shitter, or should i say game journalism is.
  • @3 - Damn! Have fixed it now, thanks for noticing that.
@5 - Our categories have been the same, basically forever. But Merry Xmas, and that! Thanks!
  • @Ritchie, well i don't follow "awards shows" so i wouldn't know its basically been the same forever.

Maybe you should leave the performances & stories for the medium that relies on them movies :)

By the way i'm about to start Control, and the only performance i will care about is the performance of the frame rate, hopefully its consistent.

Merry Xmas to you & yours :)
  • @Blue. If you care about the performance of framerate hopefully you are a PC gamer. There no better way to have "Control" over the FPS you want. ;)

P.S.: Still waiting on more supply for the RTX 3080... *cry*
  • Looking over this has made me realize what a shit year it's been for releases.
  • @5 what an asinine way to critique a set of awards, dude - the order in which they laid them out? Not to mention story is almost always the most important part of a game in my eyes and that of many others. I'm just completely confused how you think your criticism is in any way valid...
  • Assassin's Creed best audio? The entire game sounds terrible because its super compressed. The sound files are saved at 24,000 Hz sample rate with a bit rate that peaks at 70kbps. Standard CD audio is 44,100 Hz, DVD is 48,000 Hz. If you're playing on a decent sound system the game sounds like it's coming through tin cans. This is one of the biggest reported issues on the Ubi forums (which they are of course ignoring, having saved tons of space on the install). I recommend reading this analysis on the audio:

  • Best new IP should go to immortal Fenyx rising. As for best publisher/developers those should be charged to the worst publisher/developer
  • @navalia

No i don't care for high frame rates etc, i just want a consistent frame rate even at 30fps.

    PC's are for emails lol.
  • @DAEMON, Is it any surprise, though? These award type "events" whether its film, music, or gaming are nothing more than popularity contests for how big a brand an entity may be in their respective field. I think the only times these types of awards are most accurate is when a category is "worst/shittiest games of the year"
  • Best audio for AC Valhalla!?!?!? Yeah, sure, maybe I could go along with that if my game's audio wasn't so screwed up. My in game audio sounds like I'm in a large concert hall ALL THE TIME. I don't even play it any more. Such a disappointment. Maybe one of these patches will fix this sometime next year.
