Having been responsible for recent remasters of Star Wars: Episode I Racer, Jedi Knight II, and Star Wars: Republic Commando (the latter two are currently available on PS4), developer Aspyr Media is reportedly working on a Knights of the Old Republic remake. The RPG, developed by BioWare and released in 2003 takes place around 4,000 years prior to the rise of the Empire, before the events of the original 1977 Star Wars movie.
Aspyr, whose main raison d'etre at present is ports of old Star Wars titles for iOS and remasters of Star Wars games for consoles, is owned by Embracer Group (the parent company of THQ Nordic and many others). According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, a KOTOR remake could be in the offing.
Speaking on the MinnMax Show, Schreier and a separate report from Eurogamer (via VGC) state that while Aspyr has normally ported or remastered Star Wars titles, Knights of the Old Republic could be “more of a remake”. Similar reports emerged back in January that a KOTOR remake could be on the cards, with rumblings back in January 2020 suggesting that the project had been approved by EA.
Could the much-loved tale of Jedi versus Sith finally be receiving an oft-requested remake, then, despite no longer being considered part of the Star Wars canon? This certainly sounds promising. Fingers crossed for a Knights of the Old Republic return.
