Seven senior developers at Gearbox, all of whom worked on Borderlands 3, have departed the company to work on a new independent project together, Axios reports.
This group includes senior producer Christopher Brock, lead mission designer Keith Schuler, art director Scott Kester, creative director Paul Sage, UX director Chris Strazs, and lead character artist Kevin Penrod. Brock, Schuler, and Kester had all been with Gearbox for over ten years.
The notice of their exit was apparently announced internally about a fortnight ago, and the group was working together on project in pre-production before leaving, with Gearbox now shifting new team members over to this project.
“Before their transition, the group was part of a not-yet-announced pre-production team and their departure will cause minimal disruption in our current plans,” said Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford in a statement to Axios. “The bulk of our attention at the moment is dedicated to finishing Wonderlands.”
It's unknown what this new independent project will look like or when it will be announced. Axios reports that there is some excitement within Gearbox, with the departure of some of the old guard meaning that “new blood” will be leading the pre-production project.
