Despite a long period of dormancy for many of its major IPs, Konami could be planning revivals of its biggest franchises, including Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill. That's according to a report from VGC, originating from anonymous publishing sources (who apparently don't have permission to publicly discuss the projects).
The Metal Gear series has been on hold since Metal Gear Survive launched to a critical kicking in 2018, while Castlevania has been treated to multiple remasters in recent years, but the last mainline entry in the series was Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 back in 2014. Over the past ten years, Konami has spent more time focused on pachinko gambling games.
Now, following a restructure at Konami, the company is reportedly planning a return to premium game development, starting with a new Castlevania title, believed to be a series “reimagining" in development at one of Konami's internal studios in Japan (with support from external parties), according to sources.
A Metal Gear Solid remake could also be in the offing, with VGC being told that an external studio in China is spearheading that particular project. Sources suggest that it could be a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, while remasters of the original Metal Gear Solid games could also be in the pipeline, ahead of a larger project.
As for Silent Hill, VGC states that its sources believe multiple projects to be underway, with Layers of Fear and The Medium developer Bloober Team previously believed to be in the frame for one of them. Another was apparently outsourced to a Japanese studio earlier this year.
It's thought - based on rumours and reports from various sources - that Konami could be poised to reveal its new Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Castlevania projects in 2022, but nothing official has been announced as yet. For now this is all pure rumour and conjecture, but as soon as something concrete emerges, we'll provide an update.
