Xbox Backward Compatibility Program Adds More Than 70 New Games to the Library Including Max Payne 3, Mortal Kombat 9, FEAR, and Dead or Alive

Microsoft has just announced that more than 70 original Xbox and Xbox 360 games have been added to the Xbox backwards compatibility library today (as rumoured), including the Max Payne series (1, 2, and 3), the entire F.E.A.R. franchise, Red Dead Revolver, Binary Domain, Mortal Kombat 9, NIER, Skate 2, and loads more.

Eleven titles have also been given an FPS Boost, bumping the frame rate up to 60fps on the likes of F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. 3, Binary Domain, and NIER, while all original Xbox games have also been given Auto HDR support, and a resolution increase on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One for supported displays, as follows:

  • 4x resolution increase on Xbox Series X and Xbox One X
  • 3x resolution increase on Xbox Series S
  • 2x resolution increase on Xbox One S and Xbox One

FPS Boost on 26 existing backwards compatible titles has also been implemented, including all Gears of War games, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins, Dead Space 2 and 3, Alan Wake and Sonic Generations. Xbox Cloud Gaming also gets FPS Boost on 33 titles, including Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and The Evil Within 2.

Skate 1, 2, and 3 are also now playable on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, while other newly added original Xbox games include Dead or Alive Ultimate, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II, Star Wars: Starfighter, and Otogi, alongside loads more. Unfortunately, this will be the final batch of back compat games for Xbox.

“This latest and final addition of 70+ titles to the backwards compatibility program was only possible through the passion and feedback from the community. Your constant requests for specific titles and enhancements encouraged the Backwards Compatibility team to partner with the original creators to preserve thousands of games from over four generations of Xbox,” Microsoft explained.

“While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints," the platform-holder added. “Thank you for being part of this journey with us.”

  • This is a fucking sexy list
  • I like to see some old 007 James games like from Russia with love and nightfire as well
  • A bummer to see that this will supposedly be the final releases, but man what a program this was. And all for free!

A couple great ones in the final batch, especially Nier.
  • Fine with this list as I got Gladius at least so yay
  • Obviously, I'm stoked to see Max Payne 3 make the list but I don't see it on the marketplace, just some Max Payne 3 multiplayer avatars. Maybe it will pop up later? Max Payne 1 & 2 have a price tag still attached to them, too.
  • Timesplitters 2 and 3 on the list :O
  • Playing Otogi again will be a trip. Now if I can just remember where I stashed it...
  • Shame that's it's the final batch, but what a send off!
  • Wait final batch? damn i was hoping for the previous soul calibur games to be put on here.. as well as warhammer spacemarine
  • Happy and sad to hear it's the last batch but I get it. I was hoping for more also like Pirates: the Legend of Black Kat and Star Wars Obi-Wan. But still great news.
  • @GenericNamertag which Soul Calibur game 4 and 5 cause 2 is already on Xbox and 5 was terrible
  • I like to see brothers in arms Road to hill 30 and Earned in Blood
  • Very sad to hear this is the final batch, was really hoping to see more xbox live arcade and Indy games make the jump.

Especially games that were part of the xbox summer of arcade lineups, like Dust an Elysian Tale.

Also disappointing to see games that are still for sale digitally on 360, not make it into the programme. Games like The Legend of Kay, a game I bought in a sale some time ago [2-4 years I think] and have never been able to play because I haven't had a 360 since the XOne released :P

I really thought that we'd see all games that were still possible to buy [except kinect games] make it over eventually, but I guess not.
