Rockstar Games has issued an apology for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, which has been plagued with technical shortcomings, bugs, and visual oddities since releasing last week.

“Firstly, we want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has encountered issues playing these games,” Rockstar said in a statement. “The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world. The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect."

For the collection, which bundles Grand Theft Auto III, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas, developer and Rockstar subsidiary Grove Street Games rebuilt the original Xbox and PS2 era games, using new assets and modernised controls that bring it in line with GTA V. However, the results have been less than desirable, and for many, GTA: The Trilogy has proved a huge disappointment. Missing music from the soundtrack doesn't help much either. Indeed, we said as much in our review, but Rockstar has plans to patch the games (don't expect missing music to be restored, though).

“We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward,” the company adds. “With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.”

Rockstar notes that developers have been harassed on social media following the launch of GTA: The Trilogy, and asks that the community “maintain a respectful and civil discourse around this release as we work through these issues.” In the meantime, the PC versions of the original GTA games have been returned to digital storefronts for purchase, having been removed.

Title Update v1.02 has also rolled out for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, addressing a laundry list of issues, including incorrect textures, characters in cut-scenes, clipping, audio lines, and other mission-specific bugs and overall issues with all three games. You can consult the complete list of changes here.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and you can see the differences between the remastered games and the originals in our comparison video below.

  • “The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect."

Then why did you release them in that state?
  • "Fixed an issue where a bridge in Flint County is invisible"
Yeah no, bridge is still AWOL.
  • I have no sympathy for those who got milked by purchasing these "remasters"

R* has made more money than just about every developer in the last decade living off of GTA, a series that is average at best.
  • thanks for the cheese pizza, Rockstar.
  • From what I understand these are built from the mobile versions of the games, just like previous re-releases to consoles. I'm curious as to why they wouldn't use the original console versions to update considering it's supposed to be the "Definitive" editions.
  • I hope anyone that wants one gets a refund. I didn’t buy it, but I can sympathize.
  • I wonder if this will all be fixed by the time physical edition drops? Also price should drop
  • I must be in the minority that's thoroughly enjoying them...
  • @Rgr8t most of the stuff they claimed to have fixed in the update weren't actually fixed. So my guess is no.
  • You can’t polish a piece of shit, no matter how hard to try.
  • I don't know, I've been having a blast on GTA SA. Hoping they rotate the games on Game Pass.
