An Atari arcade classic from 1979, Asteroids is set to make a return next month, alongside the already-released Black Widow: Recharged and Centipede: Recharged, with Breakout: Recharged set to follow. Asteroids: Recharged will be another revival of the iconic Atari shooter, from co-developers Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox Studios.
Like the original, Asteroids: Recharged will use vector graphics, albeit with a visual overhaul, and the same risk-reward gameplay that came to define the late-70s coin-op, which sold more than 3 million copies on the Atari 2600 and became the highest-grossing arcade game of 1980. The game will also include optimisations for widescreen and high refresh rates, as well as a moody synthwave soundtrack from award-winning composer Megan McDuffee.
Two-player simultaneous play will also be available, as you and another player blast back hails of falling space rock, picking up power-ups and competing for high scores. Asteroids: Recharged launches for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Atari VCS on 14th December, priced $9.99/£7.99.
