Gaming giant Epic Games has announced the acquisition of Harmonix, the developer behind hit music titles like Rock Band, DropMix, and most recently, Fuser.

The team at Harmonix will continue to support its existing titles, with DLC for Rock Band still ongoing, as well as new FUSER events. However, the developer will now be collaborating closely with Epic Games on developing “musical journeys” and gameplay for Fortnite, presumably in a similar vein to the recent Arianna Grande concert.

“Harmonix has always aspired to create the world’s most beloved interactive music experiences, and by joining Epic we will be able to do this at scale,” said Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos. “Together we will push the creative boundaries of what’s possible and invent new ways for our players to make, perform and share music.”

“Music is already bringing millions of people together in Fortnite, from our emotes to global concerts and events,” said Epic's VP of game development Alain Tascan. “Together with the Harmonix team we will transform how players experience music, going from passive listeners to active participants.”

Harmonix has posted a small FAQ on its website for anyone concerned about what this means for the studio's existing games.
