A hand-drawn 2D metroidvania, Afterimage will be whisking you away to its “breathtaking fantasy world” next year, developer Aurogon Shanghai has announced. Set in the mystical land of Engardin, Afterimage includes more than 15 hand-drawn environments, created by a supreme deity.

From huge volcanoes to the ruins of an ancient metropolis, you'll lead Afterimage's heroine, Renee, through an adventure full of mystery, which the developer claims will offer 25-30 hours of gameplay. Over 150 different “corrupted creatures and dangerous foes” await, who you'll take on with a range of weapons and abilities.

Renee can wield two primary weapons and a secondary one, able to swap between them on-the-fly in “free-flowing combat” against bizarre beasties and formidable bosses. She can also run, slide, leap, and climb, discovering secret paths, hidden chests, and powerful new skills during her quest to determine what happened to Engardin.

Afterimage will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in late 2022, with support for numerous languages. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the game.

  • Looks interesting so far. I could go for a good Metroidvania.
