Chinese holdings company Tencent has made another major acquisition, acquiring Back 4 Blood developer Turtle Rock Studios, via the purchase of its parent company Slamfire Inc. The California-based outfit, also responsible for Evolve and the original Left 4 Dead, will remain an autonomous, independent enterprise, and continuing post-launch development on Back 4 Blood will be unaffected.

“Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit,” said Turtle Rock President and General Manager, Steve Goldstein. The price of Tencent's acquisition of Turtle Rock is currently undisclosed.

At present, Tencent owns stakes in a plethora of video game companies, including total ownership of Sumo Group and Klei Entertainment, as well as a majority stake in Playtonic, and 5% stake in Ubisoft. Stakes in Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, Paradox Interactive, Remedy Entertainment, Funcom, Bloober Team, and others, also form part of Tencent's expansive portfolio.

In July 2020, Tencent even opened its own AAA development studio in Los Angeles, making games for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Named ‘Lightspeed Studios’, it lists former developers from the likes of Rockstar Games, 2K Games, Insomniac Games, and Respawn Entertainment among its ranks.
