NieR mastermind Yoko Taro has joked that the NieR series is at an end, in a Christmas message shared via Twitter. However, he would be prepared to make another game, if the price was right.
Quizzed by producer Yosuke Saito about what's next for the NieR series following the release of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… earlier this year, Taro responded with a simple “nothing”, adding: “That's right. We announced it here today folks. The NieR series is now finished!”
That said, Taro could be tempted back, in exchange for a decent pile of cash. "But… you never know… I might do more if I get a big ole' pile of money…", he quipped. “A crazy amount of money it is then…” Saito responded. “I'll just go and sort that out”.
While the holiday message from the NieR developer is clearly tongue-in-cheek, it does actually hint at more NieR to come, with composer Keiichi Okabe also keen to do more. And with 2017's NieR Automata (released for Xbox in 2018 as the ‘Become As Gods Edition’) receiving nothing but critical praise, we'd certainly be eager to play a new NieR adventure.
