GTA 6 Development is "Well Underway" Says Rockstar

GTA developer Rockstar games has finally acknowledged the existence of Grand Theft Auto 6, briefly commenting on its development in a recent ‘Community Update’ post.

The post from Rockstar sees the developer confirm that “active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway”, with more details due to be shared as soon as Rockstar is ready.

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered,” reads the official statement.

While Rockstar doesn't go quite so far as to call the game Grand Theft Auto 6 (it could be named anything, after all) it's the first time that the developer has officially gone as far as acknowledging the development of a brand new GTA game since GTA V.

We could still be waiting a while to see GTA 6, however, with a report from last year suggesting the game could arrive as late as 2025. Industry analysts also believe that GTA 6 will launch in 2024 at the earliest, given publisher Take-Two Interactive's latest financial forecast. An earlier report from Kotaku said that the game would be more “moderately sized” than GTA V.

  • Stands to reason that R* puts out a new game every 5 years. GTAVI and then RDR3 in 2028.
  • Translation. "We discussed it once a few weeks ago over leftover Pizzas and 10am beers."
  • “With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV...", yeah only because you milked it for 3 console generations without giving fans any news about another entry and focused on online microtransaction bull$$$hit instead. Nice.
  • Honestly slightly worried for this now that Dan Houser, Leslie Benzies, and Lazlow Jones are all gone. Seems like they were the real lifeblood behind all the games
  • Wouldn’t be shocked it had no SP and was entirely online.
  • Yeah, after the direction they went with 5 I have zero interest in this. It undoubtedly with be a heavily monetised multiplayer with a campaign they'll leave to drift in the wind.
  • I'm expecting the single-player experience and online to be blended this time around.

    And MTAs.

Cuz it's MTA 6 after all.
  • Rockstar has been working on GTA 6 for almost 4 years. Work began when RDR2 shipped. And with the lost of the main writers in these years, it does paint a somewhat concerning picture.
  • 'moderately sized'? you know what that means...insert quarter to continue.
  • @revczar - I feel you on that. Baked Bean nailed it above.
