While we've heard next to nothing about Dead Island 2 for several years now, publisher Deep Silver could be planning a possible re-reveal, with an eye to finally launching the game before the end of March 2023.

That's according to comments from Deep Silver parent company Embracer Group, when quizzed during a company earnings presentation held earlier today. “It very clearly is [still alive], and I at least expect the release this financial year, or sorry next financial year I should say,” the host stated (via VGC), before asking: ”So, is that reasonable and what can we expect from a title that has been in development for probably 10 years or so?"

Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors was somewhat reticent in his response, but didn't rule anything out. “I can’t talk about Dead Island 2 because it’s not announced as such from the publisher, he said. ”But we have just talked about [that] we have one unannounced AAA title… that you think is Dead Island 2, so it’s hard for me to comment further on that. But I am excited about unannounced titles."

Perhaps more encouraging are claims from industry insider Tom Henderson who claimed in a YouTube video that he's been in contact with people close to Dead Island 2's development, and reports that the game is currently in a “decent state”. What's more, the game “could be announced pretty soon with some kind of gameplay trailer,” he remarked.

“A release date is expected to be somewhere in Q4 2022, possibly leading up to next year if there are any problems with the development cycle," he added, before revealing some details on the game's opening segment. “You’re on a plane and there’s a zombie outbreak on a plane… eventually the plane crashes into Hollywood, you survive and it’s then your job to survive on the ground.”

First announced back in June 2014, it's been a rocky road for Dead Island 2, despite the fact that we had the chance to play a build created by Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager at Gamescom in August 2014. Yager was removed from the project in 2015, with Sumo Digital subsequently brought on board.

Presently, Deep Silver's in-house Dambusters Studio is working on Dead Island 2, which Koch Media promised will be a “kick-ass zombie game”, back in 2019. Here's hoping that Dead Island 2 gets a long-awaited re-reveal and release by 31st March 2023, the end of Embracer Group's next fiscal year.

  • I keep forgetting this game exists. And with Dambuster behind it, that's probably a good thing.

This game is giving me serious Duke Nukem vibes with all the dev swaps and delays.
  • Year right. Just release the game already stop with bull coming soon garbage
  • I guess I thought this game was just going to get cancelled once Dying Light 2 came out.
  • has any decade-long video game development turned out well?
  • Hate to say it but I'm kinda over the hordes of zombies thing
  • It does kinda feel like they've done everything they can with zombie games at this point but they'll continue to spew titles out full of the undead over coming up with a fresh idea.
