Ubisoft has confirmed that Skull and Bones is still on the way, despite a dearth of updates since May 2021, with the possibility that the game could still release as late as 2023 - during Ubi's fiscal year 2022-23 starting this April. It has also been reiterated that the seafaring game will be “multiplayer first”.
Since its announcement in 2017, Skull and Bones has been delayed a number of times, with reports emerging that the game had even been rebooted. It seems that part of the ‘new vision’ touted by developer Ubisoft Singapore, the single-player campaign might have been given the chop.
“It’s a very promising new IP focusing on multiplayer first, so very consistent with our strategy to bring multiplayer competition and co-op first in a big open world, with a great, attractive fantasy,” Ubisoft CFO Frédérick Duguet said during an earnings call earlier today (via VGC). “That’s of course a longer development time that we’ve had on that game, but we’re very happy with the artistic direction and the progress of the game so far,” he added.
With the campaign seemingly ditched, it appears that Skull and Bones could be adopting a live service model, featuring a persistent world to explore as you sail the Indian Ocean, taking on quests, meeting various characters, and pursuing story-driven content that will apparently adapt to collective community choices and actions. Survival game elements could also form part of the game, according to rumours.
Presumably, we'll hear something a little more tangible about Skull and Bones sometime this year, assuming the game is progressing as well as Ubisoft claims it is.
