Square Enix has said that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy's sales were below the publisher's expectations when the game launched last year.
Speaking in the company's most recent results briefing, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda said that “despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations”. However, Matsuda does go on to offer some better news, saying that “sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start.”
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy did indeed review well - we thought it was tremendous fun - but many players were wary of the Square Enix-published Marvel game, after the launch of the extremely disappointing Marvel's Avengers in 2020.
It seems that good word of mouth, coupled with plenty of discounts at retail and on the Microsoft Store, has seen Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy begin to sell a fair bit better.
