Bungie has announced that Destiny 2: The Witch Queen has gone live today, kickstarting the next chapter in the Destiny saga and the first episode in the final trilogy of the game's ‘Light & Darkness Saga’. The Witch Queen expansion adds new abilities and weapons for Guardians to wield, as you face “extraordinary challenges”.

Tasked with defending the solar system from the advancing threat of the eponymous Witch Queen and Hive god, Savathûn, you'll face her Lucent Brood in a new adventure set within the new and mysterious Throne World. As well as the launch of The Witch Queen, a new season has also begun, with the advent of Season of the Risen.

In Season of the Risen, you'll be able to start earning Season Ranks, while working alongside Cabal empress, Caiatl, in an uneasy alliance to foil Savathûn's nefarious plans and save humanity. You'll be able to track and capture high-ranking Lucent Hive in the psychic plane of PsiOps Battlegrounds, wield a Light-suppressing Synaptic Spear (the latest Seasonal Artifact), and engage in a new Exotic Quest to unlock ‘Dead Messenger’, a new Exotic Grenade Launcher.

An update to Void 3.0 is also available to all Destiny 2 players, with Aspects and Fragments added to the Void subclass. Meanwhile, the race to be the ‘World First’ to finish the new The Witch Queen ‘Vow of the Disciple’ Raid will commence on 5th March from 10am PT/18:00 UTC, with title belts on offer for any fireteam able to attain the title.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is available now, with weapon crafting, the new class-specific Glaive melee weapon, new Throne World location to explore, the Wellspring 6-player matchmade activity, and Vow of the Disciple Raid. Destiny 2: Season of the Risen is also now live, with an accompanying Season of the Risen Silver Bundle available to purchase, with the Mental Manifestation Emote and 1,700 Silver to use on Seasons, cosmetics, and other items.

  • Another expansion with no achievements. Sigh
  • I probably would have bought this if it had achievements.
  • I want to play this, but I just can't. The model of Destiny now is a big focus on the season content, so they're asking you to shell out $50-60 for Witch Queen, then another $50-60 for the seasonal content.

I found myself roadblocked a lot during New Light, when I just had the expansion through Gamepass, but the game kept teasing me with events and quests I couldn't do unless I bought the season pass. It's scummy and I got sick of it. A lot of other live service games will obviously charge for the expansions they put out, but keep most other content free to keep you playing.

Also yeah the lack of new achievements or trophies for the last 3 expansions has been very lame and seems to smack of laziness to me.
