System Shock creator Warren Spector has confirmed that he hasn't worked on System Shock 3 since 2019.
Speaking in an interview with GamesBeat, Spector re-confirmed that Chinese gaming company Tencent would be “taking the franchise forward”, as stated in 2020 when Tencent picked up the rights to the game. “It’ll be up to them to say what they want to say. There’s not much clarification I can give you,” Spector continued.
When asked how long he had worked on System Shock 3, Spector responded that “we worked on it in 2018 and 2019. That was it.”
In the months following Tencent's involvement being announced, Spector's studio OtherSide did put out a statement, saying that the studio and Spector were “still involved”, but Spector's comments suggest that involvement has been minimal.
Despite being highly anticipated by fans of the original games, System Shock 3 was never a massive AAA project, with Spector confirming to GamesBeat that the team at OtherSide consisted of seventeen staff, at its maximum. Now, Spector and OtherSide have moved onto creating a new immersive sim game with a new IP. It seems System Shock 3's fate will be in Tencent's hands.
