Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have dropped a new patch for Elden Ring, which makes a few major changes to the game, as well as fixing bugs and adjusting balance.
One major new addition is that of a brand new NPC, named Jar-Bairn. Since the patch went live, players have already discovered this NPC's location, and it certainly does flesh out one of the more interesting (and calm) areas of the game. The patch also adds a new function to Elden Ring's map, allowing players to record the name of a discovered NPC on the map after encountering them.
The patch notes also suggest that “new quest phases” had been added for certain NPCs. This seems to fix a certain glitched questline that players had recently discovered, which should now draw to a more satisfying conclusion.
There's plenty of balance fixes as well, including nerfs to some of the game's most reliable (and OP) tools, such as the Mimic Tear spirit summon, the Hoarfrost Stomp ash of war, and the Bloody Slash ash of war, which will likely change speed run strategies. Smithing Stones have also been made easier to find in the early game, with drop rates increased, and some merchants selling them, and both Cracked Pot Items and Shields have been made generally more effective.
