Having revealed the next chapter in The Witcher Saga earlier this week, developer CD Projekt RED has confirmed that the medallion featured in the accompanying teaser image, half-sunken in the snow, is a lynx, as many speculated it was.
Some believed that the medallion related to the School of the Cat, suggesting that Ciri could be stepping into the frame as the series main protagonist, now that Geralt's saga has drawn to a close with 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That is seemingly not the case.
"Ok, some mysteries should not be so mysterious," CD Projekt RED global communication director Robert Malinowski told Eurogamer. “I can confirm that the medallion is, in fact, shaped after a lynx." This is despite the non-existence of a School of the Lynx within Witcher lore, in both the books and games.
Apparently, the Lynx School exists within The Witcher fan fiction, wherein witcher Lambert and sorceress Kiera Metz head south following the events of The Witcher 3, reforming the School of the Cat as the School of the Lynx, in a joint endeavour. Perhaps in creating an entirely new The Witcher Saga, the School of the Lynx could be an entirely new entry into official Witcher lore.
Geralt belongs to the School of the Wolf, and it was clear that the medallion in the teaser image didn't resemble the one sported by The Witcher series protagonist. Of course, there's every possibility that Ciri could feature in The Witcher 4 (which won't be called The Witcher 4, despite being the fourth mainline Witcher game), although an entirely new main character could also be a distinct possibility.
