Publisher Kwalee and three-person dev team Damage State have released a new Scathe devlog today, offering a primer for its upcoming “blood-soaked” bullet hell FPS. The first in a series of devlogs, this one features insights from lead programmer Chris Dawson, revealing why bullet hell mechanics were introduced to the game.
Apparently, dodging incoming projectiles ramps up the fast-paced intensity of Scathe, as demonic hellspawn close in around you. Much like DOOM, Scathe will see you blasting monstrous enemies to chunks, as the 'Enforcer of the legions of Hell', forged from the earth "by the Divine Creator".
You'll have moves at your disposal to help cope with the bullet hell, however, including a dash that enables you to speed through attacks unharmed. As such, staying on the move during your quest to escape the hell maze by collecting three Hellstones, is paramount, and the key to survival. Of course, your weapons will prove formidable, too, whether it's the hellfire-spewing ‘Hot Hatch’ or ‘Bow Blade’ buzzsaw launcher.
Scathe will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year, with full cross-play support and drop-in/drop-out online co-op multiplayer for up to four players, who share the same pool of lives. You can find out more in the new Scathe devlog below.
