Developer Crystal Dynamics has today confirmed that it's commenced development on the next entry in the Tomb Raider series, following up 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The next Tomb Raider will use Unreal Engine 5, the studio announced during Epic's State of Unreal event.

"We are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game, powered by Unreal Engine 5," Crystal Dynamics confirmed. “Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and deliver the high quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise”.

Of course, it's early days for Lara Croft's next outing, but at least we now know that Tomb Raider will be returning at long last in a few years' time, built using Unreal Engine 5, as demonstrated to great effect in Epic's The Matrix Awakens teaser demo. And now, we wait…

  • Hopefully it’s better than last game. Was quite a letdown…
  • Really kind of sick of "stunning and brave" Lara.
  • Let's hope it's not as broken as Shadow.
