Developer Remedy Entertainment of Alan Wake and Control fame, has announced that it's working on remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in a partnership with Rockstar Games.

“We are pleased to announce that we will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games,” the Finnish studio tweeted, alongside a link to the full announcement press release.

Remedy will handle development on the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes using its proprietary Northlight engine, with Rockstar Games financing the project "in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production." This is not entirely unlike the original deal between Remedy and Rockstar that birthed the two original Max Payne titles in 2001 and 2003. In 2012, meanwhile, Rockstar decided to go it alone for Max Payne 3.

"We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games," Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser commented. "We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years and we can't wait to play these new versions."

The remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

  • Over the moon to read this!!!
  • Hopefully Red Dead Revolver & Redemption, Manhunt 1 & 2 and The Warriors will follow
  • Max Payne 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, so I am absolutely excited. I just hope there’s no New York Minute achievements.
  • Remedy: hey, we're thinking about re-mak...

Rockstar: did somebody just say milk?
  • Still not great as MP3 was. But then that game still looks and plays great on PC so it probably wouldn’t benefit as much from upgrade…
  • So many fond memories with my brother playing these games when the initially came out..

That was the true golden age for video games, hence why they keep remaking them.
  • Awesome news! Would be even better if they remastered 3 in a packaged trilogy and took out that screen blur they added in 3. That distracted from the experience in my opinion. Still great though!
  • Please give us a physical release......
  • This is the best news I have seen in a while. Max Payne is my favorite trilogy in video games. I feel like they get overlooked a lot and can be criminally underrated by people.
  • I bet R* are devastated.
