Square Enix has today released Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, remastering the 1999 PS1 JRPG for consoles and PC. The new version includes enhanced illustrations from original character designer, Nobuteru Yuuki, refinements to the game's music by composer, Yasunori Mitsuda, and various visual improvements.

Featuring more than 40 unique possible party members, Chrono Cross follows the story of Serge, who stumbles into another world, before discovering a connection between his existence on the fate of his home planet. The Radical Dreamers Edition of the Chrono Cross comes with HD character models, new artwork, and other features.

You can activate a background filter, switch enemy encounters on or off, use an auto-battle function and battle enhancement features. Additionally, the original pixel font or HD font can be toggled, and new French, Italian, German and Spanish localisation options have been added. You can also change the screen resolution, and choose whether to play with the original or updated graphics.

This new version of Chrono Cross also bundles ‘Radical Dreamers - Le Trésor Interdit -’ (a text-based adventure game released for Satellaview in 1996 and establishes the foundation of the Chrono Cross narrative), for the first time in the west. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, priced $19.99/£15.99.

  • I had never played Chrono Cross before, and when I tried to go back and play it, it just felt slightly too dated for me. Hopefully this cures that feeling for me.
