Square Enix has filed a trademark for Tactics Ogre: Reborn, suggesting that the cult-classic franchise might be returning in the near future.

As spotted by Twitter user @Renka_schedule (via Gematsu) the trademark was filed in Japan on 31st March 2022, and became public earlier today. The Ogre Battle series, which includes the Tactics Ogre games, began life with Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen on the SNES, with the most recent release being the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which released in 2010.

While the Ogre Battle games offer up a hefty dose of real-time strategy, the Tactics Ogre games are turn-based tactics RPGs. The name Tactics Ogre: Reborn makes it unclear whether this would be a brand new Tactics Ogre game, or a remaster/remake of one of the older games, although we wouldn't be surprised if it ended up using Square Enix's HD-2D art style.

As always, trademark applications don't always materialise into full game releases, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

  • Oh man, this'd be cool to try out, especially if they're remaking the old versions. I remember I had a Tactics Ogre game for PS1 that was a lot of fun to play. Although I feel like the one I had was made by Atlus and not Square Enix.
