Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has set a new record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie adaptation.

The sequel to the blue blur's 2020 film took in a whopping $71 million in its opening weekend at the US box office, beginning on Friday 8th April, speeding past the previous record of $57 million set by the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. Combined with Sonic the Hedgehog 2's international box office, which has brought in another $70 million since it released on 30th March in Europe, the film has now passed $141 million.

This surpassed the opening weekend of other successful video game adaptations, including Detective Pikachu, Uncharted, Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider, and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Perhaps this new-found Sonic love among the general public will result in better sales for its upcoming big budget “open-zone” game, Sonic Frontiers? Hopefully if that game can recapture the quality of Sonic's better titles, we could be in for a bumper year for Sonic.

  • Good on the film for being successful, but regarding the game and it's potential success, there is so much that seems off with the choices made for that game. Did anyone ever really want an open world Sonic game? Especially in an over-saturated market of open world games. Also, haven't they learned that their 2D games do far better than their 3D games? I get that the new game aesthetically falls more in line with the films, and I'm sure the game will see success, likely because it piggybacks off the success of the films... just seems odd for Sonic in my opinion.
