With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 currently raking it in at the box office, reports abound that SEGA could be mining its archives for another big screen adaptation. Apparently, classic beat 'em up, Streets of Rage, could be next in the frame for the movie treatment.
Deadline reports that John Wick writer Derek Kolstad may be attached, having written a script for Streets of Rage on spec. Kolstad currently has John Wick Chapter 4 on for 2023, and most recently penned 2021 Bob Odenkirk starring action flick, Nobody.
Apparently, dj2 Entertainment, the production company that helped produce Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and is involved in adapting It Takes Two for TV, is also on board for the Streets of Rage film. The Equalizer and The Magnificent Seven production outfit Escape Artists is also said to be part of the project, which is reportedly in a very early phase.
As such, details on plot, characters, and casting are currently non-existent, but if Nic Cage isn't first choice to play series villain Mr. X, I'll see that as a serious misstep. Whether the Streets of Rage movie will be based upon the latest instalment released in 2020, or the three seminal SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis games is unknown for now.
Personally, I'd be using Streets of Rage 2 as inspiration, given that it's still completely perfect. A release window for the Streets of Rage film has yet to be confirmed.
