Gunzilla Games has announced their debut game Off The Grid, a third-person shooter battle royale set in a cyberpunk world.

Off The Grid is being created by District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp, who holds the role of Chief Visionary Officer, and promises to “evolve” the battle royale genre by putting a strong emphasis on narrative progression. The game will see 150 players fighting in PvP battles, with additional PvE storyline missions on the same map, with other players. Each decision a player makes towards unravelling the story will impact everyone's gameplay, and there's a strong focus on crafting and trading in-game items, as well.

“With OTG, our ambition is not only to create the Battle Royale 2.0 by adding deep player progression, but to build an evolving world designed to take on a life of its own, changing in unexpected ways each time a player rejoins the game,” says Blomkamp. “With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon.”

Off The Grid is due to arrive on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2023, with more information due to be announced in the coming months. You can check out the cinematic teaser trailer down below.

  • Keen to see someone try to expand the genre in new ways, but a lot of this sounds like auteristic puffery.

I can't see how abgame could possibly be both a deep narrative experience as well as an engaging battle royale. Functionally those things are just diametrically opposed, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I just don't see this being it.
