Following news of Haden Blackman, co-founder of Mafia developer Hangar 13, departing the studio, reports have emerged that a Mafia prequel could be in the works. Furthermore, the game may be ditching the Illusion Engine used for the Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition, in favour of Unreal Engine 5.
The report comes from Kotaku, who states that the Mafia prequel is in the early stages of production under the codename ‘Nero’, under newly appointed Hangar 13 studio head, Nick Baynes. Other details and specifics on the project are currently unknown, which is understandable given the game's reportedly early development status.
Presumably the proposed Mafia prequel will deal with the early years of original Mafia protagonist, Tommy Angelo, or it's entirely possible that the game could introduce a new character, or, flesh out an existing one who isn't Tommy. For now, however, all we can do is speculate. Hopefully, we'll hear more soon.
