A planned Marvel MMORPG, from the studio behind DC Universe Online, has been cancelled. Nixed in early development at Daybreak Game Company, the MMO would have presumably followed a similar approach to DCU, but parent company Enad Global 7 has confirmed that the game has now been canned.

“EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games," the company said in a statement (via Eurogamer). “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects."

Enad Global 7 had earmarked more than $50.5 million to invest in Daybreak's Marvel MMO over the ensuing three years, but will now use the funds to “diversify” its portfolio across a number of smaller projects. Upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, alongside “new game opportunities with our first party, original IPs,” are among EG7's revised plans.

  • “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile" sounds like they cancelled it because of the Avengers game not being "successful" they didn't wanna chance it since no one supports Marvel games
  • It never would have worked if they had recycled dc universe online’s style of making your own character in the world, with Marvel games people play to be those Marvel characters.
