Next week will see the launch of Klonoa remasters via the Klonoa: Phantasy Reveries Series, bundling remasters of the original two entries in Bandai Namco's platforming franchise. Should the Phantasy Reverie Series remasters prove successful, it could lead to “opportunities to further expand the IP”.

“With Klonoa, since there’s been large gaps between the release of the games, at this 25th anniversary’s timing, we decided to release this title so people can play the original [games] first,” Producer Ryo Ishida told game journal Lock-On (via VGC). “And if this remastered version is loved by the community, there might be opportunities to further expand the Klonoa IP and do other remasters of other titles as well.”

Ishida noted that the “first goal” behind Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series - which includes a remaster of the 2008 Wii remake of the 1997 PS1 original Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, and a remaster of the 2001 PS2 sequel, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil - is to “spread awareness and reignite the Klonoa IP.”

Marketing Manager Moa Ikeuchi added that the primary target for the Phantasy Reverie Series is the “veteran gamers” who still love Klonoa. “Alongside the memories that our existing fans have, we have also made the game more appealing and [suitable for younger gamers] and also people who haven’t [discovered Klonoa] yet,” said Ikeuchi.

“That’s why even though our main target is veteran gamers, we hope that a large variety of game fans will enjoy and experience the charm and appeal of the original Klonoa games," he continued, stating that it's because of those veteran games that the studio has been able to “reinvent and reveal" the remasters to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Klonoa.

There's potentially more Klonoa to come, then, all being well. Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series launches for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on 7th July.
