Games with Gold to Axe Xbox 360 Titles This October

Richard Walker

A staple of Games with Gold for ages, the humble backwards compatible Xbox 360 game will no longer be included as part of the monthly offerings from October, Microsoft has confirmed.

While monthly Xbox One titles will continue to be available to Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, Xbox 360 titles will be nixed, due to the limit for adding new Xbox 360 games apparently being reached. You will also be able to download and access any of the titles you've already claimed.

Details of the upcoming changes have been sent out via email (in Dutch) to some Xbox Live Gold members, as spied by Wario64 on Twitter. Of course, the months leading up to October will bring further Xbox 360 titles via Games with Gold, including this month's picks.

“From 1 October 2022, the monthly games provided to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Live Gold members via Games with Gold will no longer include Xbox 360 titles,” the email being sent out to members reads. “We have reached the limit of our ability to bring Xbox 360 games to the catalogue; however, Games with Gold will continue to include exciting Xbox One titles and exclusive savings each month.”

It concludes: “This will not impact any Xbox 360 games that you downloaded before October 2022. Any Xbox 360 titles that you redeem via Games with Gold before that time are yours to keep on your Xbox account, regardless of whether you continue your subscription.”

And, there's always Xbox Game Pass, of course, which, for the first half of this month has twelve titles on the way, including the return of Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2.

  • hmmm. What about all the ones they added not to long ago via BC? We still didn't get MK9, MKvsDC or any of The Darkness games for GWG.
  • That's because MS can't just choose to make a game free, they need the license holder's permission as well as needing to pay them. So likely with what's left, they aren't able to get approval or the price isn't feasible.
  • Let's hope we get some good ones to round it off. It's a shame that so many are unavailable to buy outright however.
  • Good job to all the people who wanted to cancel Games with Gold because "there's only crap"
  • I hope that doesn't mean the beginning of the end of X360's support...
  • It was a good run with the 360 titles.

We take it for granted today but getting the likes of Fable 3 or Assassin's Creed 2 for 'free' was a huge deal back when GWG started. It added tons of value to the Gold subscription that already felt somewhat fair in its pricing just with the Xbox community access and discounts.
  • The writing was kind of the on the wall with this, as they have to take from a limited pool of 360 titles and the quality has been pretty low for awhile. Everything now is designed to be towards Gamepass, so the fact we still get GWG and will continue to get X1 games is a surprise.
  • People on TA are speculating and assuming that instead of getting four X1 games it'll only be two. We'll see.
  • I would be very surprised if they give 4 X one games. I would prefer 2 good games instead.
  • Quick! Can someone link to all the 360 BC titles ever released for free so we can make sure we've got them all before October? Thanks in advance if you can do this!
  • not too bothered. Id prefer is microsoft could actually fix the reward app on the x1, seeing as mine hasnt worked at all for the last 5 days now
  • Personally, I won't miss the OG Xbox or X360 games. I'd be far more impressed with one newer game each month that a handful of "bad" games.

Certainly doubt MS will offer 4 Xbox One games each month. No way!
  • So they can't add any new games to Backwards Compatability/GWG?

Would it be feasible for them to just redo the 360 games that were GWG back in like 2013 or something like that. It wouldn't expand the list but would give a chance for ones they missed, or at least allow people to have them digitally too.

I realise this is probably difficult and is a bit selfish, but I would love if they continued doing 360 games, even if they have been GWG before.
  • @ mando6599: This should be up to date..

  • I agree that it is likely they won't be offering four Xbox One games each month, but if they wanted to, they honestly could with the amount of games in the console's catalog. Particularly from the indie side of things. Guess this a wait and see deal...
  • Well that's a shame, but understandable enough. Good on them for giving warning and not just cutting that cord without notice.
  • Thank you steakslave!
