Next Assassin's Creed Reportedly Set in Baghdad

Matt Lorrigan

The next Assassin's Creed game will be set in Baghdad, according to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier.

Schreier reported on the next Assassin's Creed game earlier this year, set to be called Assassin's Creed Rift and starring Basim from Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Yesterday, Schreier went on to confirm the setting of the game as Baghdad.

Schreier was commenting on a post on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, which stated that the next Assassin's Creed game would be set during the Aztec era.

“The next AC game is Rift, which is set in Baghdad,” Schreier rebuked, linking to his original Bloomberg report from February.

“After that will be AC Infinity, and while that's going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them, I've heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec.”

Assassin's Creed Infinity is the next officially-announced Assassin's Creed game, adopting a live-service model, although it won't be free-to-play. Assassin's Creed Rift, then, looks set to be the last traditionally released Assassin's Creed title, and will have a stronger focus on the franchise's traditional stealth gameplay.

  • Ubisoft...GIVE US FEUDAL JAPAN ALREADY!!! Calm down. Calm down. lmao I swear this company is tone deaf to what people have asked them for years to make. I'm sure this will be cool too. It just seems like such an obvious fit for the series to let you run around as a ninja or samurai and take some shogun heads.
  • I agree Japan would be amazing to play in. And how doesn't want to be a ninja.
  • Or we could just demand the long-awaited Tenchu sequel from Activision and let Ubisoft come up with new eras to explore. Either way, I am sure the next setting will be interesting.
  • I guess, but I mean... it's right there!
  • Ghost of Tsushima is probably the best AC game for years and is set in Japan. They'd be directly copeting againts a particularly successful open world action game. I think they're best off trying to dive into less well-trod ground in other countries and time periods.
  • @Dervius I agree with you. Although Ghost of Tsushima is a playstation exclusive game, it is true that setting the next AC in that same period wouldn't be the smartest approach. Probably a better set could be not Japan, but China during the Ming dynasty or in the late Roman Empire maybe.
  • I'd definitely prefer Mayan culture, a hardly used setting in videogames. But what I also really want to see is an Assassins Creed that's set in ancient Asia, e.g. China or Japan or the (in games) never seen culture of ancient Siam (Thailand) or Khmer (Cambodia). Why not make something different? Ah, I forgot, it's Ubisoft. Feeding the masses.
