Tomb Raider Movie Sequel Reportedly Canned As Rights Expire

MGM has reportedly lost the movie rights to the Tomb Raider franchise, kicking off a bidding war between other studios, according to The Wrap.

It's reported that MGM had until May 2022 to greenlight a sequel to 2018's Tomb Raider movie. With that window having passed, the rights have reverted to the owners of the Tomb Raider IP, and several Hollywood studios are now bidding to the rights for a big screen Tomb Raider project.

A Tomb Raider sequel was in the works at MGM, with Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green set to write and direct. That project has now fallen apart, apparently, with Lara Croft actress Alicia Vikander no longer attached to any future Tomb Raider movies.

It seems likely that we'll be getting a new actress stepping into the shoes of Lara Croft in a future film, then. Have anyone in mind who you think would do a cracking job as Lara? Let us know in the comments.
