Overwatch Will Stop Selling Loot Boxes by End of August

Overwatch is giving loot boxes one last hurrah in a new event, before they are removed from sale in the game at the end of August.

The Overwatch Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 event is now live, bringing back plenty of skins and gear that players might have missed out on in previous events, and allowing players to purchase Anniversary Loot Boxes. These special boxes will have a chance to contain items from past Anniversary and seasonal events.

However, once the event ends on 30th August 2022, Overwatch will no longer be selling loot boxes at all. This is in line with Blizzard's decision to ditch loot boxes in the upcoming Overwatch 2, when it launches as a free-to-play game in early access this October, replacing the original Overwatch game in the process. Players will still be able to earn loot boxes through normal play after 30th August until the launch of Overwatch 2 on 4th October, however. Any unopened loot boxes will open automatically before this date.

It's good to see Blizzard doing away with lootboxes in Overwatch, but it's not surprising to see them attempt to squeeze every last cent out of them ahead of that removal. You can check out more details on the event in the trailer down below and on the official website.

  • Probably because of Diablo Infinity, it’s giving them lots of cash.
