THQ Nordic parent company Embracer Group continues to buy up anything it can find, and now it has entered an agreement to acquire the IP rights for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

That's not just the video game rights, either - Embracer is looking to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, which owns the worldwide rights to movies, video games, board games, and all other merchandising related to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as other Middle-earth related works.

“I am truly excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world's most epic fantasy franchises join the Embracer family, opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group,” said Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors.

“Going forward, we also look forward to collaborating with both existing and new external licensees of our increasingly stronger IP portfolio.”

The rights were previously held by the Saul Zaentz Company, which first acquired the IP back in 1976.

Embracer lists new opportunities to explore the IP, including producing films based on characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, and Gollum, as well as providing new opportunities for fans to explore Middle-eartn through “merchandising and other experiences”.

The next Middle-earth games coming out are The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, published by Nacon, and an unnamed title published by Private Division.

  • It’s so strange that barely a week ago I was saying I wished there was more good LotR content coming out and there have been two announcements regarding the franchise since then. We truly do live in a simulation lol

On topic, I fully support any new content as long as it tries to stay true to source material. I feel like LotR is due for a resurgence.
  • My love for LotR lives and dies in those first movies. Same with TMNT. Idk if I'm not a true fan, I just love those movies and want to play remasters of the EA movie tie-in games.
  • Hopefully they don't milk the cow to death. At least Embracer isn't Disney otherwise Lord of the Rings would be doomed like Star Wars is...
