A new Mafia game is in development, according to series developer Hangar 13.

The announcement came as the studio celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Mafia franchise, with the first Mafia game launching on PC on 29th August 2002.

In honour of this milestone, Hangar 13 published an interview with Roman Hladík and Tomáš Hřebíček, who have worked on every game in the Mafia series, along with Mafia: Definitive Edition game director Alex Cox. While the interview covered plenty of subjects from across the Mafia franchise, the final question asked the team what was next for the Mafia franchise.

“I'm happy to confirm we've started work on an all-new Mafia project!” said Hladík. “While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories.”

Mafia and Mafia 2 were developed by Czech studio Illusion Softworks, before they were merged into Hangar 13, which worked on Mafia 3, as well as definitive editions of Mafia and Mafia 2.

Hangar 13 was also reportedly working on a live-service third-person action game, before it was cancelled by parent company Take-Two, despite $53 million already being spent on it.

  • So down.

All Mafia games are 100% amazing pieces of work.

I know it wasn’t them who made it, but I really wish someone would remake The Godfather games, I think Hanger 13 and Take-Two would do it very fine justice if they somehow acquired the rights to do it.
  • You're telling me that Mafia 3 was an amazing piece of work? I thought it was awful. So bad that I didn't actually want to play it. Love the second game.
  • Gameplay was fine,, story was fine IMO.

Nothing wrong with you not liking it and someone else liking it though.

    To each their own.
  • I will ALWAYS go to bat for Mafia 3. The world may be uninspired, but the story of revenge, and the performances from the guys who voiced Lincoln and Donovan are second to none imo. And the dlc about the cult was absolutely fantastic.
  • I really enjoyed Mafia I Definitive; never played the original but I thought the remake was done well. I played Mafia II way back when on the 360 and kind of want to get Mafia II Definitive (if it ever goes on sale by itself again; missed it at 66% at the beginning of August), but I'm steering clear of Mafia III. I've heard too many horror stories and the setting really isn't appealing to me.
