Halo Infinite Split-Screen Co-Op Isn't Happening, But Players Have Figured Out How to Make it Work Anyway

With developer 343 Industries revealing last week that split-screen campaign co-op for Halo Infinite has been scrapped, industrious players have figured out a way to get it up and running anyway. Taking advantage of a menu glitch, it's possible to add three local players to your campaign session on Xbox Series X|S, and play 4-player couch co-op.

According to the tutorial posted by @HaloCreation (via @Zeny_IC as posted by Eurogamer), the trick requires following the simple steps below, and appears to work without any major, noticeable issues. However, there's always the possibility that employing the trick could corrupt saves or crash your console, and that 343 could eventually roll out a patch to put a stop to the workaround.

  1. Go to the campaign menu and load a save
  2. Click ‘Play’ and get ready to quickly go to your friend list
  3. As soon as "loading map" appears, go to your friend list and join a friend who's idling in the menus
  4. You can then leave the fireteam
  5. In the custom lobby, under server, select ‘Offline’
  6. You can now connect your other controllers and profiles
  7. Click 'Play'.

"After checking on Series X, the menu glitches to play Halo Infinite campaign splitscreen still work: no crash in cutscenes, no issue with AIs, etc.," Halo Creation observed of the menu glitch trick. "Never thought I would have to go through this to play with friends at home."

As for what's next for Halo Infinite, 343 Industries has confirmed that Season 3: Echoes Within has been pushed into March 2023, and that the Forge beta and online Campaign Co-Op will finally be surfacing as part of November's Winter Update. A new two-week ‘The Yappening’ event (trailered below) is also now live in Halo Infinite, with new cosmetics to earn in Multiplayer from now until 20th September.

  • This has been known about for some time, but it's the first I've heard about 4-way split screen. The underlying code that even allows this to work is there, but for whatever reason 343 either can't or won't implement it as a proper feature. This is a real bad look for a flagship title guys.
  • I doubt they would patch it not to work… they’ve screwed up enough as it is. Bit corrupted saves/consol is something everyone should be afraid which for most will be enough not to try …
  • Sorry to everyone who bought this game. Hopefully, you'll remember all of this next time and NOT buy it. 343 doesn't deserve your money after Infinite.
