Battlefield Campaign-Focused Seattle Studio Named as 'Ridgeline Games' Headed Up By Halo Creator Marcus Lehto

DICE has revealed that the new Battlefield studio based in Seattle is named Ridgeline Games, and will see Halo creator Marcus Lehto heading up a team focused primarily on creating a new narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe “that will engage fans in new and exciting ways while remaining true to the classic elements of the series."

In a new statement, Battlefield General Manager Byron Beede writes: “As we approach our 20th anniversary, we’d like to share the future of the franchise and be clear with you on our vision: We are all-in on Battlefield. We are committed to unlocking its potential as one of the best first-person shooter franchises in the world. To make that vision a reality, we’ve launched a global effort, coordinating multiple studios under a leadership team of industry veterans to build a connected Battlefield universe.”

Beede will be working alongside Respawn's Vince Zampella, as well as DICE's Rebecka Coutaz, Ripple Effect Studios' Christian Grass, and Industrial Toys' Alex Seropian, in a joint effort to “grow Battlefield into an incredible first-person shooter series”. Meanwhile, Lehto's Ridgeline Games and his “world-class team” will be focusing upon building a new narrative campaign for Battlefield, as Ripple Effect looks to create “an entirely new” Battlefield experience.

Beede added that Creative Director Lars Gustavsson has departed DICE after twenty years with the Battlefield series, having been part of the studio since its inception on 10th September 2002. “We would like to thank him for his invaluable experience, expertise, and friendship for all these years,” said Beede.

“Lars has dedicated a substantial portion of his life to Battlefield and is proud to have helped shape the franchise into what it is today,” Beede added. “He is excited to pass the baton to the next generation of Battlefield creators at DICE, Ripple Effect, Industrial Toys, and Ridgeline Games.”

For now, DICE and its support studios will continue work on Battlefield 2042, with more content to follow the game's current Season 2: Master of Arms.

  • Bad Company 3 when??? I need a conclusion to the story and so far been disappointed since 2013.
  • Lehto knows his stuff but it'll take more than him for EA not to bugger it all up anyway.
  • Having Halo talent does not guarantee a good game. Remember Disintegration? The game also directed by Lehto that was marketed almost entirely on his involvement with Halo, and remember how everyone almost immediately forgot it existed when it’s mediocre review scores came in?

    Maybe with some DICE talent and EA’s money, they’ll do well, but attaching names to a studio or production as if that’s a mark of quality isn’t necessarily a recipe for success. We see it time and time again; person or studio x famous for game y, releases product z to an underwhelming reception.
