SEGA has today announced that Guardian Heroes, its Treasure-developed action-RPG brawler originally released on the Saturn back in 1996, is set to make a triumphant return with completely remastered HD visuals, online co-op and battle modes. SEGA is also promising some all-new modes for the game too, when it releases on the Xbox Live Arcade later this year.

“Ever since we began to make SEGA’s classic Dreamcast and the Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favourite games has been pouring in,” said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA. “Players have been clamouring for this treasured favourite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them.”

Here's what to expect from Guardian Heroes, when it releases on XBLA in autumn 2011:

  • Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of five heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings
  • Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once
  • Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters
  • Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation

Further details like price and so on, have yet to be confirmed.

  • Fantastic i cannot wait for this
  • Wow. And here I was, thinking Sega had completely lost the plot.
  • Never played it, heck never even heard of it! But will defo give trial a shot when it comes out. Not a big fan of brawlers though...
  • Wish they would come out with Power Stone.....this is a step in that direction I suppose
  • I was rather hoping to see Panzer Dragoon Saga. I'll probably give this a look notwithstanding.
  • Sega Saturn was quiet a good Console.
  • At long last! My most wanted game on xbla, and just an excellent fit for online co op.
  • Holy crap, only my favourite ever game from Treasure. I sunk hours and hours into this on the Saturn and still have my original copy. Fantastic news. Now, just Shen Mue left....
  • In the immortal words of duffman OH YEA!!!!! I remember choosing Bust a Move 2 over this all them years ago when in town with my nan and to this day i still cannot think what the hell i was doing >_< this is great news as a mint copy easily nets over £100 on EBAY. Now release Alien Soldier :D

  • first thing i said when i saw that headline was BADDDDDDDDDDDDDD cant wait man, didnt expect this or even thought once it would come to XBLA. great news for the day
  • What abou other Sega Dreamcast games for the XBLA? They promised 20+ games, and came up with 4 titles only : ( I want Shenmue ._.
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga next then, please?
  • Never heard of this but I am a Sega fan so bring it on.
  • Never played it (not a big Sega fan), but I am interested in playing this. I love playing RPGs. Good news for me. I will get this if the price is actually desent. One of the few Sega titles I did like back then was Panzer Dragoon. Surprised they haven't brought back that game yet.
  • GO SEGA!!! Too many great classics....hope they keep em comin!!
  • Good. The only Saturn game that was worth having finally gets ported. The GBA version was alright, but it deserves better than that. This is great news.
  • Bah, there are dozens of Saturn games worth having. :
  • Great news! Guardian Heroes was definitely in my top three on the Saturn along with Dragon Force and Panzer Saga... I remember playing it for hours on end, couldn't get enough of it... Can't wait!!!
  • #13 - Sounds like you're thinking of Knights Of The Round? That was a lot like Golden Axe... Guardian Heroes has RPG elements and has a lot more depth. Having said that, I loved Knights Of The Round. :) Guardian Heroes was one of the very best games on the Saturn, and costs quite a bit if you want to pick it up now... let us hope that they avoid the mistakes of the average GBA Guardian Heroes game! This sounds like more of a true port, so fingers crossed.
  • Nice they should release more Saturn games, Panzer Dragoon anyone?
