Will Mass Effect 3 Have Online Multiplayer?

Richard Walker

An advertisement has been spotted in a South African magazine, suggesting that Mass Effect 3 could be shipping with an online multiplayer component. The scanned page posted on the BioWare forums includes a list of features for the Collector's Edition, which ends with the 'online multiplayer pass'. Most curious, yes?

Eurogamer has since learned from anonymous sources that Mass Effect 3 could indeed feature an online co-op mode that is entirely separate from the campaign, a bit like Rage's 'Legends of the Wasteland' co-op missions perhaps.

BioWare has expressed its interest in Mass Effect multiplayer, and although nothing has been confirmed or set in stone, this is a strong hint that multiplayer may be making an appearance in Mass Effect 3. Or it could be an error and the scanned ad could be alluding to the online pass EA bundles with all of its new games. We'll just have to wait and see.

Mass Effect 3 is out on March 6th, 2012 in North America and March 9th, 2012 in Europe. Will multiplayer be in? Check out the scanned magazine page below and make your own mind up as to whether it looks kosher or not.

  • It better not have any f*cking multiplayer.
  • Interesting indeed, the pass maybe just like the one in Mass Effect 2 for the network, possible misprint. Really can't see them putting it in due to the multiplayer in Dead Space 2 bombing quite bad.
  • Multplayer better not break this great game. Been looking forward to ME3 for awhile now.
  • Dear God, please no.
  • WTF?? That's like making Mario Kart single-player offline-only. What a bunch of t*ssers!
  • I was thinking the same as #1 and #4. Too bad the nightmare about this game having MP is comming true.
  • id rather they not waste their time on multiplayer, and spend it polishing the game to make sure its the best in the series
  • Why do all great games have to ruin themselves with the curse of multi-player?
  • [Comment deleted]
  • If it has Multiplayer, i'm passing up on it. Although, I think this'll just be a misprint...then again, it's EA...
  • If this does has multiplayer and gets multiplayer achievements i'm gonna kick a krogan in the quad.
  • I DO hope it's an error, or else we'll have to sharpen our pitchforks and light our torches and pay a visit to Bioware...
  • For the love of Christ... not every game needs multiplayer! :/
  • Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo ! Thumbs down BioWare.
  • Co-op, maybe. But competitive multiplayer? I'd rather headbutt a Krogan.
  • *grumble grumble*
  • I dont understand the criticism aimed at the game having multiplayer. Its not going to lessen the value of the campaign and only adds the option to play it.
  • Bring on the class and rank based competitive MP with visceral and over-the-top action!
  • @12 If it has multiplayer, it won't be Bioware to blame - it will be EA.
  • If it has multiplayer I'm not going to rage just because it has multiplayer. That's stupid. If the single player has been compromised in some way because of the multiplayer, then I will rage. But this is Bioware. And Mass Effect. Anyone who thinks this game is going to be anything other than exceptional will definitely be mistaken.
  • co-op sounds good. but no multiplayer please. Co-op would be tons of fun though.
  • For the love of God, please NO!!!
  • @17 The problem is that time is taken away from making the single player campaign as good as it can be. Corners are cut, funds are diverted and, before you know it, Shepherd has a flickering groin and Tali's boobs take 5 minutes to catch up with her.
  • Thinking about it, an Online PASS Card could be like the cerberus network pass card which in ME2 gave us free access to Zaeed. This could be how we access the dlc character, weapons pack etc. We can only hope.
  • @24 Good point!
  • Surprised to see so many people not wanting Multiplayer I mean its just something separate anyways? rumoured to be like the waved base DLC for ME1 can't recall its name right now which would work but hell they are making The Old Republic pretty much Star Wars version of Mass Effect and its a MMO so why would Mass Effect not work? I could see ME working and I would love a full co-op experience. I imagine if we don't hear anything from BioWare we will soon know when the achievement list leaks since I can't imagine not having some tied to Multiplayer to get people to try it out.
  • if it's an online pass as the Cerberus network on ME 2 it will be ok, but if they want to make a multiplayer mode on ME 3... i don't want to think to this, they 'll break a myth! please NO multiplayer!!!
  • @26 From what i've heard over lots of forums, people have no problem with a co-op horde mode or side missions etc, but a multiplayer (team deathmatch etc) would just ruin an otherwise epic series.
  • A feature this game does not need
  • first AC, now this :( I'm probably at 300hrs+ on each ME - don't need MP to keep me playing it...
  • BIOWARE---Please no MP on ME:3. Make another game in the ME universe and put MP on that.
  • Please God, tell me it inst so
  • I'm thinking they advertised it as an "Online Multiplayer Pass", but it's just an EA "Online Pass" that will be similar to the Cerberus Network from Mass Effect 2. I wouldn't worry about it.
  • @31 Bioware did say that the chances were high on them making another ME game but not involving Shepard. So as unfortunate as it is, they may well put an MP in that.
  • Mulitplayer is the reason why I never 100% most games. I absolutely HATE MP achievments. I should not have to rely on other people or play a game for 6 months (Crysis 2) to get an achievment. The majority of the games on my list are incomplete because of MP cheevos. I am currently working on 100% ME1 cheevos and I plan to do the same for ME2. If they add MP cheevos to ME3....I hate you EA!!
  • I thought I read somewhere that they (Bioware) thought about MP for ME3 but decided against it. I don't think they'd put online into this title. I could see another title in the future with the Mass Effect name having MP but not ME3.
  • Please don't fuck with my favorite game series EA, you already ruined Dragon Age and many others. Let BioWare finish ME3 how it should be (single player), Let them release and support SW: TOR, and then let them do a massively multiplayer Mass Effect
  • How come awesome single-player games can't go more than 2 follow ups without adding MP?! I'm a misanthropic asshole and I enjoy having a game where no other human being can bother me! FUCK YOU!
  • I'll agree with anyone on this post that MP DOES NOT belong to the ME franchise. I read an article a few months ago stating Bioware would not put MP in this game, but perhaps any future ME games (agreed with #36). I truly enjoyed this game when it first came out. It didn't have all the hype and mass hysteria associated with huge games. @35 I hear you with the lousy MP achievements, Assassin's Creed really pissed me off with Brotherhood's shitty MP achievement list. I usually pass over a game with MP, couldn't be bothered.
  • Probably just a survival mode
  • Co-op yes, competitive... not so... Imagine romancing someone on your friends list xD
  • This is worst than assassins creed.
  • @42 Assassins Creed multiplayer is amazing.
  • Bunch of haters here. Let them add the online co-op... if you don't like it, don't play it. I'm sure the single player will be just as good if not better than the last two games.
  • This breaks my heart. I'm still going to get this game and I'm still going to fall in love with it like Mass Effect 2, but no multiplayer for me.
  • The one-time-code in Dragon Age 2 and Alice Madness Returns were also labelled as "online pass" and as we know, both did not have MP.
  • I Hope It Doesnt Have Competitive Mulitiplayer, Would Be Cool Though If Your Mates Could Take Over The AI Squad Mates.
  • NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @ 41 Romancing the NPC's would be far easier, unless you boost. :P
  • Oh Microsoft, why didn't you buy Bioware....ugggghhhh! NOBODY WANTS MULTIPLAYER IN MASS EFFECT! A game that is known for its awesome single player experience doesn't need it. Why do the hardcore gamers always get thrown under the bus while the casuals get all these damn gimmicks to try and draw them in?...still praying that this ad is not accurate though
  • Honestly, if this game has multiplayer, I'm just not going to buy it. Mass Effect may be my favorite game series ever, but multiplayer is far from my favorite thing about any game. Even if I don't play it at all, just knowing it's there would just ruin the experience for me.
  • oh well let's hope there's no achievement for multiplayer...
  • I'm worried just like everyone else, but than again, it might just be sloppy journalism. By "multiplayer pass" they perhaps meant "online pass", the standard code in all EA games, even in singleplayer only ones.
  • Ohhh boo hoo I dont want multiplayer....if it does mp then dont fukin buy it, its as simple as that. I personally hope I have sometning to do after a long single player that being coop or multiplayer as long as it doesnt affect the single player..
  • I've just had a horrible thought: the omni-blade allows for executions or assassinations, which have become standard in many MPs.
  • @53 /Facepalm.
  • #55 don't facepalm yourself...that hurts doesn't it?
  • Nio. It won't. They'll include an online pass. that's it. this backwater magazine doesn't know what the hell the word pass means. they assumed it meant online multiplayer. Great fucking news break, x360a.
  • I don't understand people. The game was delayed, maybe this was why; so that they'd have all the time they need to perfect the single-player, and still be able to put this out. I am a huge Mass Effect fan and obviously hope that this won't take from the single-player, but what many people won't acknowledge is that it very easily mightn't.
  • @43 exactly look at assassins creed mp it is astonishing but mass effect is not capable of doing good mp? i honestly think its just the cheevie whores out there that are worried about their completion if they put mp cheevs that are challenging and/or time consuming...if its enjoyable then who gives a fuk about a couple of online cheevs
  • @59 That is only part of why we dont want MP. 90%+ of games who add MP to great games often make the single-player either shorter or worse than its predecesors, in many cases both.
  • JFC Chicken Little much? If it is multiplayer, it's probably on-line co-op and will be completely separate from the main campaign. You people act like Bioware just shit in your corn flakes.
  • Way too questionable of a source for me to have any reaction to this. I assume it will just be another Cerberus Network deal unless BioWare confirms otherwise. Mass Effect versus makes no sense outside the fact that the game does technically have factions that could be warring. Additionally, when developers add multiplayer to single player games, they usually go on the offensive pretty earlier to convince all of their fans that things will be alright. They are usually not.
  • Getting it either way
  • i hope so!
  • Such a shame if this is true. I wish more companies would follow suit with the guys who made Saint's Row The Third. They realize they can't compete with the likes of Call of Duty, Halo or Battlefield so why bother? They removed the Competitive multiplayer & kept co-op. I don't need multiplayer in games like Bioshock 2, Assassin's Creed, Max Payne or Dead Space. I want a good story in games like that. I really hope Mass Effect doesn't follow suit. There is nothing more annoying than playing a game that should have an amazing fleshed out single player experience & seeing Multiplayer on the main menu. Some games I understand, but games like this don't need it.
  • Didn't they already say somewhere that there WOULDN'T be multiplayer? I'm assuming it will be a code like the Cerberus Network.
  • ME3 + Multiplayer = no sale for me i'll just keep on playing SW:TOR instead and watch the end of ME3 on youtube for free =)
  • Lots of wild rumours get posted on x360a. Online pass is included with SP only games with EA as well. Now we've got an entire army of people mad over what will most likely be nothing.
  • Co-op might add some different flavor...
  • What did i tell you guys last month. it HAS got it. saw the files with my own eyes
  • As a huge mass effect fan I'm pretty worried. I wouldn't mind co-op missions or modes (maybe something like horde) actually I would love a co-op mode if it was done right. However competitive multiplayer is a big NO!
  • I don't want multiplayer in Mass Effect. Never ever ever ever!!! Honestly, it's a game that really doesn't need it. Plus, I don't care for multiplayer for a few reasons: 1. Crappy Online Achievements. 2. Jerks online. 3. Detraction from singleplayer. 4. Few games support online play after shipping (no rebalancing, no fixing of glitches or cheats, no banning of cheaters, etcetera). 5. Online play doesn't always run well, or isn't always fun. 6. Cooperative play ruins the experience of the singleplayer campaign. We all have friends who TALK THROUGH CUTSCENES or OVER DIALOGUE, so we know how that goes.
  • maybe. I'm pretty open to new experiences as long as the singleplayer is done right and multiplayer achievements aren't ridiculous
  • If they implement multiplayer into the game it will detract time and funds from the singleplayer aspect of the game. Which should be the ONLY aspect. If you want multiplayer so bad, you have fucking Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Brink etc. So go play those games.
  • It doesn't even make sense because even if the multiplayer is excellent, it will be pretty much DOA since it isn't one of the big 4.
  • @74 I Agree, if you guys are dying for a Third-Person Multiplayer Shooter go buy Gears of War 3 but if you guys are like me then your buying Mass Effect 3 for the amazing Story and long Campaign not to mention tons of Side-Quests and Exploration. BioWare/EA please keep Mass Effect 3 a Single-Player Game and don't ruin it by having a cheap Multiplayer because we don't want less in a Single-Player RPG we want more and we expect to see more Content in Mass Effect 3 then 1&2 put together.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO /darth vader
  • seriously wont get this game if it has multiplayer could maybe live with co-op
  • STOP PUTTING MULTIPLAYER IN EVERYTHING!!! I'm sure they'll be 300 points worth of crappy multiplayer achievements too... Bodycount wouldn't have been so damn unbearable if it weren't for the fact that theres 200+ mulitplayer points on A GAME NO ONE IS PLAYING ONLINE!!! Bioshock 2 didn't need it, Homefront didn't need it, the Elder Scrolls series doesn't need it, Batman doesn't need it. Just stop wasting deveolpment time and money on multiplayer...
  • @20 Could not have said it better myself.
  • Meh, misinterpretation leading to a printing error. Someone just got fired.
  • This would confirm what was seen earlier this year.
  • @79 Bodycount wouldn't have been so damn unbearable if they would have just canned the whole project -_- Anyways, they've had plenty of time to tweak the single player campaign, it'll be amazing. It's Mass Effect and Bioware. They have yet to do a single thing to convince me otherwise, and have even led me to read 5 books, which are the only books I've read in over 10 years. These guys know what they are doing. If it has mp, it'll be great. If it doesn't, it'll be great. Get over it and have some faith. Personally, I don't mind either way. AC did a fantastic job with mp, as did Dead Space. Long as it's not the same quality as Bioshock mp, I'm happy.
  • People accepting MP in their SP games causes this to happen. It's like a disease just waiting to spread even more. Bioware seems to have gone down a long, dark road since EA got into the picture. Frank has obviously been poking around for this to happen.
  • I don't really care if the game has multiplayer i, as long as its got a long, long story i'm happy.
  • Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
  • Horde/Firefight type affair that was put briefly in arrival dlc for Mass Effect 2. Either that or co-op missions. Competitive multiplayer would be a bit pointless to be honest unless they have improved combat greatly. Mass Effect 2 combat wouldn't suit competitive at all!
  • Its not like I am actually going to play the multiplayer anyways when I could play Battlefield 3 or Starcraft 2 :P
  • But I digress. This is just a misprint. I doubt ME3 will have multiplayer.
  • Hope this will be something like ME2 Cerberus Network...
  • I don't have a problem with co-op, infact i like the idea of going around with a mate playing as a biotic lifting an enemy out of cover for you to shoot, why are people so close minded when the outcome could be great... or not.
  • Why would multiplayer ruin it? It would just add to the game. I wouldn't mind doing some co-op with a friend.
  • I honestly think 4 player co-op would be nice, as long as there aren't hard-ass achievements along with it. But I could tolerate a few co-op achievements. I love Co-op as long as it is with my friends and they aren't bumbling idiots.
  • @58 The game was delayed to incorporate Kinect features into the game.
  • It might just be something like the Cerberus Network, but who knows.
  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DEAR GOD DON'T LET IT BE MULTIPLAYER! I want it to be co-op campaign.
  • I'd love to see a seperate Coop mission based thing, that'd be funsies, or even a (obviously smaller) but Coop campaign, i'd find that really interesting. In no way should it affect the main single player experience. Competitive Multiplayer doesn't sound like a good idea for mass effect.
  • @96 Does co-op not have multiple players? Am I just missing something or do I play co-op by myself?
  • @20 Couldnt have said it better myself. Grow up guys.
  • As long as there isn't like 20 achievements in multiplayer mode; I'll be content.
  • It's funny how for along time everyone wanted multiplayer/co-op in games. Where now everyone is threatening to riot like it's Frankenstein. And I won't pass judgement on it till I play it. Like Assassin's Creed. It was fun to play and just added a different experience to it all. If you don't like the multiplayer....here's a suggestion...don't play it?
  • Grow up. if you dont want it, dont play it when it comes out. As simple as that. You people act as if multiplayer doesnt belong in a third person shooter rpg. you have to realize that the multiplayer doesnt need to have any real story, just multiplayer. it seems that it would work as well. with biotics able to take people out of cover and such, etc. quit complaining about nothing
  • Some of you people are impossible to please. If you don't like it don't play it, simple as that. If it exists then I will give it a shot at least. The worse that can happen is I won't like it and it's not like they'd let the story suffer in this game due to the addition of multiplayer. They've spent two games crafting a believable universe, they won't just drop the ball now.
  • I am certain it is the co-op separate from the campaign, we should take it as a hint at the possibility. ...oh, and it's nice for them to be advertising with a Shepard resembling the legit default Fem Shep...or did Bioware listen to fans and go that way with ALL their advertising, ditching their contest results?
  • I'll be concerned if it ruins my ability to 100% ME3, otherwise I don't care... too much, anyway. Can't be any worse than ME2. @103... "it's not like they'd let the story suffer in this game due to the addition of multiplayer." Funny, they let the story of ME2 suffer to turn it into more of a shooter. What are you basing this confidence on? Today's lesson for the unobservant: resources are always finite. Every cent or second of money or time devoted to MP or overhauling combat that was already overhauled inherently takes resources away from writing, story, side missions, et cetera. You know, those silly things most RPG/Bioware fans actually want. @101... like Assassin's Creed? The story in AC jumped three sharks on it's way to MP land and the series became *far* less interesting, even if the MP itself was vaguely fun. Bad example of MP doing no harm. Actually, Uncharted is pretty much the only example I can think of where this transition from SP only to SP+MP can be said to have no downside at all.
  • As long as the SP portion of the game is good I don't mind.
  • Why on earth ruin the game with multiplayer. Every Mass Effect has been excellent... Bioware, listen to fans...we do NOT want multiplayer!
  • Probably mean online dlc pass.
  • Ugh, I despise multiplayer. Other than my MMO's, I like to play games entirely by myself and don't like them ruined by multiplayer, or even co-op requirements. Multiplayer typically means a lot of crappy multiplayer achievements as well as a watered-down single player experience. I'll be so thrilled if/when this whole multiplayer fad is gone, dead, and buried where it belongs. So sick of the expectation of having to be social with everything we do all the time. Bah!
  • As long as they have two production teams working on SP and MP individually, like AC:B, then it might actually be pretty good. Just in case that's not making sense: have one team working on single player only. And the other team working on multiplayer
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Or possibly yes, depending on how they implement it. I could imagine a coop horde style game mode being quite fun, biotics, engineers & soldiers working in unisen to survive wave after wave of enemies. I cant really see adversarial multiplayer being much fun though. Of course as people have speculated earlier it could be the new cerberus network thing so the whole discussion could be moot

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! That is all.
  • i had this crazy idea one night just thinking about me3 and how it woud linclude co-op. have the setting be in a parallel universe where there's like a bonnie and clyde shepard team where you can even engage in conversations with your co-op partner at different scenes. lol idk what im saying
  • multiplayer ruins another great single player game..... i bet in about ten years there will be no SP games. thats when ill retire from gaming for GOOD!~!!
  • So many of these comments seems to be part of the larger problem. Sooner or later, no such thing as SP games will exist without Multiplayer.
  • No no no no no no no HOW MANY SWEET FUCKING CHRIST TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SAY NO! Leave MP out of M.E.
  • It's like when they added multiplayer to Bioshock. In the words of Darth Vader, "No ... Nooooooooooooo!"
  • oh well, what if its good?
  • #9 broke the comments section I'm guessing. It's no wonder why MP sucks for these types of games. Look at all this negativity.
  • God damn it! When are publishers going to learn that MP is not the answer to creating a game with COD like success. If the MP plays like crap or is rushed just so the franchise can say "now with MP" then it can ruin a game. AC, Dead Space, Bioshock etc some games just don't need it! Co-op - People like co-op, go for that instead. It will still make a pretty pile of cash without p*ssing off the population of fans of your IP.
  • I play Mass Effect for the compelling single player story, I really don't want multiplayer in ME3!
  • I'd lmao so hard if ME3 had like 20 multiplayer achievements lol. I'm not gonna lie, though, it would add some depth to it. Once I beat a game like ME, I tend not to play it again as I don't want to sully the experience I've had in it. I'm not one for replaying stories that I like, because since I know what to expect, it draws away from the fun of the game and I tend to end up skipping a lot of the cutscenes lol. It's Bioware, so I do have 'some' faith in them to make a memorable multiplayer experience. The only downside for me with that would be the fact that I 'hate' online TPS games, aside from GRAW and R6. This could either make or break the game, if it's true. Tbh, I was 'really' disappointed with ME2 and idk...maybe this could be the shot in the arm the series needs.
  • This is just another example of EA's corruption bleeding into really good video games. BioWare excels at single-player campaigns and story-telling. Why on Earth, (and more importantly how,) would they even implement this? I don't know a single person who would be pleased with Mass Effect multiplayer of any kind.
  • MP or not the game'll suck ass Itll play more like a TPS than an RPG, mark my words
  • Atleast its not called Mass Eff3ct like Driv3r or F3AR. but yeah, I would hate to see multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 but even if it did, it won't stop me from playing it.
  • Jesus, how is multiplayer a bad thing? If you don't like it then simply don't play it.
  • @#112: God damn it, man. Marking both of those as spam. The only thing that post manages to accomplish is annoy people; now i have to scroll the page in order to read the posts that, rather unlike yours, are worth reading.
  • I don't care either way. Ijust want to finish single player campaign and finally see how it ends:-) If there is co-op, all the better, but I've gone so far without anyway:-P
  • Just please no MP achievements it took long enough to get 100% on ME1 and ME2 I hate online achievements and I'll be very disappointed in this game if they make MP achievements.
  • To everyone saying MP isn't a bad thing: It is a bad thing because it means that the ME team will have been split in two to make the MP, therefore less people will have been working on SP. This will probably result in a shorter and worse game than it could have been with a full team. It could mean something like 50 less side missions or less depth to the main story.
  • Id be happy as hell to have multiplayer campaign... one of us as Shepard.. and two of us as his squad mates.. fucking people up. hell yes.
  • Truthfully i dont think people really understand one thing about this, do you actually think EA is going to bioware, bending them over a table, twisting there arms and forcing them to do multiplayer when Bioware themselves have the old republic coming out in DEC, and EA has battlefield 3 coming out in 2 weeks. The ONLY series EA ever ruined was command and conquer because the shut the studio down and did it themselves, but i digress if you think me3 will have mp go google me3 multiplayer i just read two articles that interviewed jesse houston and mike gamble there both producers and both have said that they are committed to making the best singleplayer experience and have not even talked about mp, this is all news sites just trying to get people to come back >:(
